Introducing TRADES Series!
At Hands-On Heroes, we are dedicated to inspiring the next generation of builders, makers, and doers. Through storytelling and STEM education, we promote the skilled trades and empower children to explore their potential.
Breaking Bias. Building a New Normal.
That Construction Worker Is My Mom is an empowering children’s book Series that challenges traditional stereotypes and helps kids see that the world of construction and all skilled trades is a place where anyone can belong.
These books aren’t about excluding the incredible men who do this important work every day. It’s about expanding the picture to include women too, because when children see a woman leading on a jobsite, managing crews, or operating heavy equipment, it rewrites the script of who these jobs are for.
And this message isn’t just for girls. We’re raising boys to see women in leadership and technical roles as completely normal. Just as they grow up seeing women as teachers, nurses, and caretakers, this book helps plant the seed that women can be construction workers, electricians, welders, or project managers, too.
By showing a mom in the field, suited up in her PPE and building the world around her, we’re helping all children, regardless of gender imagine a future without limits. A future where talent and passion define your path, not outdated assumptions.
That Construction Worker Is My Mom is a tool for early learning, awareness, and empowerment. It’s about building a generation that sees people not by roles or stereotypes, but by what they’re capable of creating.
Hands-On Heroes is a certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization committed to empowering children through early exposure to careers in the skilled trades. Our mission is to break stereotypes, promote representation, and introduce kids to the powerful and creative careers that keep our world moving from electricians and heavy equipment operators to carpenters, welders, and beyond.
Our growing TRADES Series includes 12 trade-specific titles and 1 Project Manager book, each paired with a STEM kit, a collectible badge, and a Hands-On Hero Card that shares fun facts, safety tips, and hands-on instructions. These books reflect real-world tools and stories to help children see themselves as future builders, no matter their background or gender.
Research from the Association for Career & Technical Education shows that early exposure to career options increases the likelihood of entering those fields, which is why we focus on reaching kids before middle school.
We believe in planting the seed early—and continuing to water it.
Sponsor books and STEM kits for students in your local schools, libraries, or after-school programs.
Bring our stories to life by volunteering to read to a school or community group.
Want to make an even greater impact? Invite a tradesperson from a non-traditional background to join you—suited up in their real PPE. When students hear the story and then meet someone who truly works in the field, it makes the experience unforgettable.
Let them see someone like them doing the job and believing they can too.
Support future book development, outreach efforts, and the distribution of kits to underserved communities.
Help us highlight a real woman working in the trades to inspire the next generation through video storytelling.
Bring Hands-On Heroes to your home, school, or event with our interactive story + activity bundles.
We’re always looking for individuals and organizations who want to champion the trades with us.
